Hello friends,
Last week I went on a sketching adventure in London. The sketchbook course I have been doing is coming to an end and I wanted to do a project where I could use some of my new skills and ideas. So I pondered what I might do and then I randomly came across this post about a London Urban Sketchers day a few years ago. Their goal was to sketch some of Christopher Wren’s churches in the City of London. I thought that was the perfect sketchbook project for me!
It was a lovely day and I did a lot more sketches than I had expected. I wrote a blog post about it here.
What I also hadn’t expected was how a random idea/project would take on a life of its own. Before my day in London, I had done a little bit of research about the churches. Just to see if any of them were particularly worth a visit etc.
But I am still reading about the churches, watching YouTube videos about Wren, looking into books about the City itself. I really enjoyed the sketching of course, but what really captured me was walking through the narrow lanes and past old buildings in the City. I want, need, to know more. I have become a little bit obsessed with the churches and Wren and that area of London.
For a mad moment I thought maybe I’d do a Green badge guide certification but that costs over £2K so I quickly decided that probably isn’t going to happen! :-)
It was just a random idea to see how many churches I could sketch (or just walk past) in a day and now I have become really interested in this place I never gave much thought to before. To be honest, I’d never explored that part of London before, only walked to Bank or Monument station, that was about it. But now it has…I dunno…become a special part of London to me.
All of that to say that random ideas are great, you never know which weird and wonderful rabbit holes they may lead you down. I hope you find your own random idea or topic to explore in ridiculous and time consuming detail! :-D
Have a lovely weekend!
x Carina
Some Things I Enjoyed This Week
The Little Book of Humanism* by Alice Roberts and Andrew Copson.
On Sunday we had a bbq. We cooked whole corn on the cob in the husk which charred and bits fell all over the table. :-) We even sat in the sun in the garden to eat. It will probably be the last bbq of the year but who knows. It is a nice memory of late summer. :-)
It was our anniversary on Monday, 13 years! We went out for a meal and then we bought vegan chocolate donuts to have afterwards.

I really love learning about the history of places from the buildings. Glad you found something new to get enthusiastic about.
