Hello,
Last week, I spent an afternoon learning some more knitting. It felt a bit self-indulgent considering everything that is going on... But it turns out I needed that mental break.
Until now, any knitting technique apart from knit and purl stitch has seemed Very Difficult And Confusing. Trying to learn new knitting things I really have to concentrate. And being fully concentrated on what's on my needles meant that I couldn't also be keeping an eye on Twitter or watch tv. For an hour or so, my mind was fully focused on what I was doing and that felt really good. Peaceful. Refreshing.
And I did learn some new knitting stuff, cables to be precise. It is wonky, but it's cables nonetheless. And you know what? Learning something, that before I had viewed as something akin to magic and beyond my capabilities, felt really powerful.
(I have frogged the cables so I can start over. Thankfully, I had put in a life line, so I won’t have to go back to the very beginning!)
I wrangled that yarn and my brain and made those wonky cables and maybe this isn't completely beyond me after all. I felt less powerless, like I had some agency. Not over anything else, but in that moment, I could change my reality when it comes to knitting.
'Get better at knitting' has been one of my new year's resolutions for the past two or three years. I am really happy that I am finally doing something about it.
Will I ever be a master knitter? Probably not but that is not the point for me. I've wanted to learn for years, and now I am learning and that is great. Maybe there are other things I can learn too? To keep learning, that is the point. Always be stuffing new stuff into my brain. :-)
I hope you have a good weekend.
x Carina
