I put a handful of acorns from 'my' tree1 in a pot in the autumn. Covered them with soil and watered them. I had no idea if anything would come of any of them. A few weeks ago, when I had just about given up on anything happening with the acorns, there was a little green sprout in the pot!
And now look at it! It has been fascinating to watch it grow. And it seems to be following the Fibonacci sequence2 of growing its leaves, very exciting to be able to follow this up close.
Watching my own tiny tree grow is in stark contrast to some of the footage I have seen from Gaza. Where Israeli soldiers and settlers have torched and bulldozed olive trees, some ancient, destroying the ecology and the livelihood of the Palestinians who tend to the trees. One video in particular was heart-breaking. An old lady was begging the soldiers to not destroy her tree which she had planted and taken care of for decades, 'it is like my child' she said...
